The R&D Tax Credit

One of the most under-utilized tax savings opportunities for finishers is the U.S. Credit for Increasing Research Activities (R&D tax credit). The R&D tax credit rewards companies who invest resources in innovation, product development, process and technique development, new materials or resins, and process development/improvement. In addition to Federal tax savings, several states have a similar program that rewards companies for the development or improvement to its products or processes.
Working Through Challenges with Today’s Paper Stocks and Coatings

Whether involved with hot foil/embossing, cold foiling or digital foiling, using the correct paper stocks and/or coatings can be the difference between a successful or failed project. This workshop will discuss the importance of pre-planning and provide tips on how to successfully implement a program to best work with challenging paper stocks and coatings. Specific challenges will be discussed, and the workshop will include open discussion time for others to share their experiences and challenges.

The call for sustainable products and manufacturing practices has reached a fever pitch – and will only grow louder. The pressure for companies to join the circular economy by providing less environmentally impactful material options, address end of life issues such as recyclability, and illustrate sustainable production practices is increasing. Keynote speaker Gary Jones will help to define what sustainability means to those in the print industry, discuss consumer demands and define regulatory influences that are shaping the current landscape.

Digital Decorating – Where Does it Fit and Where is It Going?

In print embellishment, the industry buzz is focused on the use of digital foiling and digital spot and specialty coatings. The process creates beautiful, stunning effects that can easily be customized. This workshop will include print finishers, digital printers and industry suppliers who see the benefits of including the process in their offering of services. In this interactive workshop, the panelists will share where they have seen increased demand for the process, how they have marketed it and where they see the market for it in the future. Attendees can ask questions to help determine if digital decorating is right for their organizations and the feasibility of adding it. There also will be discussion on how the popularity of digital decorating processes has helped grow overall use of print embellishments.

Finishing and binding are the ultimate visual mediums – so, how are print finishing and binding business showing customers what is possible? How can a foil job be turned into one that also incorporates a soft-touch coating or embossed details? What is the most effective way to show printers, designers and print buyers what types of print embellishments are available? A panel will share their experiences in marketing to print customers to encourage the use of print decorating techniques and increase profit. Hear from prominent FSEA members who have implemented unique promotional strategies in their facilities, and learn more about the new Foil Cheat Sheet and how it can be used to promote the use of foil.
Sustainability Panel: Sustainability Meets Print Decorating

Is a greeting card decorated with foil recyclable? What chemicals are used in coatings? What can be done with foil waste? Join panels members to discuss recent studies on the recyclability of foil and current best practices. This session will help you answer questions from customers and assure them that print embellishments can be an environmentally friendly choice.

The Impact of Cold Foil on the Embellishment Landscape

Cold foiling applications for sheet-fed print projects have increased around the globe. The technology to apply cold foil, the formulations of foil products and the adhesives for the process also have improved. In addition, processes such as Cast & Cure use cold foil equipment to offer an additional embellishment choice. This workshop will provide information on the growing market for cold foil and Cast & Cure, discuss where they fit best in the marketplace, and explain how they can work together with the more traditional processes of hot foil stamping and embossing. This will be an educational workshop aimed at those currently involved with cold foil, companies considering the addition of cold foil equipment capabilities and print finishers wanting to learn more about the process.
